Black Rice: why 172 g per cup is wrong
USDA Branded (Black Rice, unspecified brand) publishes 172 g per US cup of black rice. This site rejects that figure and publishes 180 g instead, from Lotus Foods Black Rice label (density 0.7608 g/mL, matching the composition of the substance). The reason:
Single unbranded USDA GBFD record 4.4% below the tight producer-and-USDA cluster of 180 g/cup. Could reflect a shorter-kernel Thai or Indonesian cultivar, but with no brand attribution to verify and no supporting sources at this density, excluded as low outlier. The branded cluster of Lotus Foods, Rice Select, and USDA GBFD UPC 072769004209 all converging at 180 g/cup is the more reliable anchor.
The arithmetic
| Source | 1 cup | Density | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| USDA Branded (Black Rice, unspecified brand) | 172 g | 0.728 g/mL | Rejected on physics |
| Lotus Foods Black Rice label | 180 g | 0.7608 g/mL | Published here |

Scan a grocery barcode, get a better version of the same thing.
I built SwapGenie for the problem this site cannot solve: the label. It reads a barcode, scores the product against your own allergens and diet rather than a generic grade, and suggests what to buy instead. Android now, iOS in progress.
SwapGenie is in closed testing, and the first 100 testers get 3 months of Pro free.
