Ground Cumin: why 192 g per cup is wrong
USDA Branded (Ground Cumin, Morton & Bassett) publishes 192 g per US cup of ground cumin. This site rejects that figure and publishes 96 g instead, from USDA Branded (Ground Cumin) (density 0.4058 g/mL, matching the composition of the substance). The reason:
192 g/cup is twice the producer cluster and physically impossible for ground cumin. Would exceed the density of even the heaviest granulated spices (granulated garlic at 160-227 g/cup) despite cumin's much lower physical bulk density. Almost certainly a labeling data-entry error (perhaps a whole-cumin figure mislabeled as ground, or a per-fluid-ounce vs per-cup confusion). Not a legitimate alternative measurement.
The arithmetic
| Source | 1 cup | Density | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| USDA Branded (Ground Cumin, Morton & Bassett) | 192 g | 0.8115 g/mL | Rejected on physics |
| USDA Branded (Ground Cumin) | 96 g | 0.4058 g/mL | Published here |

Scan a grocery barcode, get a better version of the same thing.
I built SwapGenie for the problem this site cannot solve: the label. It reads a barcode, scores the product against your own allergens and diet rather than a generic grade, and suggests what to buy instead. Android now, iOS in progress.
SwapGenie is in closed testing, and the first 100 testers get 3 months of Pro free.
