Where this number comes from

A cup of peanut butter chips weighs about 168 g (5.9 oz), and a tablespoon about 10.5 g. USDA, America's Test Kitchen and Hershey's own recipes agree within 1.3%.

Peanut butter chips are small drops of peanut-flavoured confectioner's coating, made mostly of sugar, peanuts and vegetable fat. Reese's, made by Hershey's, sells the best-known version in 10 oz bags, and store brands make their own. They go into peanut butter blondies, cookies and brownies, haystacks and no-bake bars, and they melt for drizzles.

USDA's record for peanut butter confectioner's coating weighs a cup of chips at 168 g. America's Test Kitchen's Peanut Butter Blondies use half a cup at 3 oz (85 g), 170 g a cup. The two are 1.2% apart, inside the 5% this site allows for chips and other crystalline solids, so this site publishes USDA's 168 g with high confidence.

Hershey's recipes for its own chips say a 10 oz package is 1 2/3 cups, 170 g a cup. That agrees with the published figure, but it is a bag's weight rounded to a cup fraction rather than a measured cup, so it is listed without a figure, as bag statements are for butterscotch chips, where makers' fractions disagree with each other. The bags' nutrition labels give a tablespoon as 15 g, the FDA's reference weight for baking candies; that is a fixed serving weight, not a weighed tablespoon.

King Arthur Baking's chart has no peanut butter chip row; its only peanut butter row is for the spread.

The physical check: peanut butter chips have the size and shape of chocolate chips and a similar mix of sugar and fat, so they should weigh about the same per cup, and they do. This site's semisweet chocolate chips weigh 168 g a cup, white chips 170 g and butterscotch chips 170 g. In a cup of drops much of the volume is the air between them, so small differences in what the chips are made of barely move the total.

Practical guidance: use 168 g per cup of peanut butter chips, 84 g per half cup and about 10.5 g per tablespoon. A 10 oz bag (283 g) holds about 1 2/3 cups. Peanut butter chips can replace chocolate chips cup for cup and gram for gram in cookies and bars; for melting, use low heat or short bursts in the microwave, since the coating thickens if it overheats.
