ExactCups

Shredded, grated and crumbled cheeses

Cheese measured by the cup: shredded cheddar, Monterey and pepper Jack, Mexican blend, Swiss, Gruyère and mozzarella, grated and shredded parmesan, grated Cotija, and crumbled feta, blue and goat cheese and queso fresco. A cup of shredded cheese is mostly air, so its weight depends on how fine the shreds are, how moist and fatty the cheese is, and how hard the cup is pressed.

Held to 10% tolerance, the same as milled powders, because shreds and crumbles pack the same way: loosely spooned and firmly packed cups of the same cheese genuinely differ. Most retail labels print 28 g per 1/4 cup whatever the cheese, which is the one-ounce serving convention rather than a measurement, so labels are kept as sources but never decide a figure on their own. Soft cheeses that spread and self-level in the cup (cream cheese, ricotta, cottage cheese, mascarpone) sit with the liquids.
