Mini Marshmallows

One US cup of mini marshmallows weighs between 43 and 50 grams (1.5 to 1.8 ounces), depending on how the cup is filled and which source measured it. That range is the answer; a single number would not be. Every figure behind it is below, with the method each source used.

Also called miniature marshmallows, marshmallows mini, small marshmallows, Jet-Puffed mini marshmallows, baking marshmallows.

Most sites print one number for a cup of mini marshmallows. This page prints 43 to 50 grams, because that is what USDA SR Legacy "Candies, marshmallows" (FDC 167995), Kraft Jet-Puffed Mini Marshmallows (producer label), Campfire Miniature White Marshmallows (producer label), Kroger Mini Marshmallows (producer label) and King Arthur Baking Ingredient Weight Chart actually measured, and it names the method behind every figure rather than picking a favourite.

Two or more sources describe the same way of filling the cup and still disagree, by 16.2%. That is more than this site will average over, so all the figures stand and none is chosen. Sources span 43-50 g per cup, a 16% gap, over the 10% tolerance. USDA lists a cup of miniature marshmallows at 50 g; the Jet-Puffed, Campfire and Kroger labels give 2/3 cup at 30 g, 45 g per cup; King Arthur gives 43 g. No single figure is published.

Why this page publishes a range

A cup of mini marshmallows weighs 43 to 50 g (1.5 to 1.8 oz). USDA lists a cup of miniatures at 50 g, the Jet-Puffed, Campfire and Kroger bags label 2/3 cup at 30 g, which is 45 g per cup, and King Arthur gives 43 g. The 16% gap is over the 10% tolerance, so this entry publishes the range.

Marshmallows are a sugar and corn syrup foam set with gelatin, whipped full of air and then cut and dusted with cornstarch. Miniatures are the small cylinders sold for hot chocolate, rice cereal treats, sweet potato casserole and s'mores bars. USDA puts marshmallows at 16% water and 81% carbohydrate; the rest of their volume is air, which is why a cup of them weighs barely more than a fifth of a cup of water.

USDA SR Legacy "Candies, marshmallows" (FDC 167995) lists 1 cup of miniatures at 50 g, 10 miniatures at 7 g and one regular marshmallow at 7.2 g. Every US bag checked, Jet-Puffed, Campfire, Kroger, Hill Country Fare and Great Value, labels 2/3 cup at 30 g. Because every brand lands on exactly the same pair, 30 g beside 2/3 cup, it reads as a fixed serving weight with the nearest convenient fraction of a cup printed next to it; it puts minis near 45 g per cup, but the volume is rounded. King Arthur's chart lists mini marshmallows at 1 cup = 1 1/2 oz = 43 g, close to the labels. Recipe sites that count cups per bag put a 10-oz bag at about 5 1/2 cups, 51-54 g per cup, nearer USDA.

The physical check is about foam and fill. The marshmallow itself is a light foam, and the little cylinders stack with gaps between them. Both vary: different brands whip to different densities, and marshmallows are soft enough that a cup filled by pressing holds noticeably more than one filled by pouring. A cup at 0.18-0.21 g/mL is mostly air, inside and between the pieces, so a few grams' difference between sources is the expected result rather than a mistake by any of them. Stale marshmallows dry out and shrink, and a cup of them weighs more.

Practical guidance: for rice cereal treats, a 10-oz bag holds 283 g, about 6 cups at 45-50 g per cup, and a 16-oz bag 454 g, about 9-10 cups. Recipes for treats usually give the marshmallows by bag or by weight, which is the reliable way to buy them; when a recipe gives cups, pour the minis in loosely and level the top, and expect about 45 g per cup. For hot chocolate, a small handful of 10 minis weighs about 7 g.
